Duquesne University Weeklies - Smash Bros. Melee

Almost every Friday from 1:00 PM til whenever (midnightish). Simple, short busride to get there and back. Free food at 10:00 PMish. There's generally around 15ish people playing on 3 setups. I'd give detailed instructions on how to get there, but normally I just follow other people who (look like they) know what they're doing.

It's actually not that bad even if you get lost since almost any bus will take you back to CMU campus, though I do recommend going with a few other people at least the first few times.

    Directions:

Grab the 61A, 61B, or 61C towards downtown from the bus stop at Forbes and Morewood.
Take the bus to Fifth and Washington (it'll be just past some construction), get off.
Walk back a bit to the previous intersection and turn to your right; you'll see the entrance to the University up a steep incline.
Go through the main entrance and follow the road further up the incline until an intersection, and turn left.
Follow this road up to the main building, the Duquesne University Union. Go inside.
Go straight back to the elevators and stairs, take them down to the first floor.
Get out, there will be the game room nearby. You'll be able to see people playing Smash from the entrance.
You'll have to talk to the desk attendant to get in, and chances are one of the Duquesne students will have to sign you in. This generally isn't a problem; just tell the attendant that you know the guys playing Smash and go talk to them, they'll handle everything.
    Enjoy Smash!

    Heading back to CMU:
Go back up to the second floor (the ground floor) and exit the Union through the main entrance. Walk straight across the roundabout and you'll go over a walkway with an elevator at the end. Take it down to the first level, Forbes Ave. There will be a bus stop nearby, take any of the 61s back to CMU, or the 500. The 500 will drop you off behind Mudge, the 61s will drop you off in front of the Cut.

    Why you should go:
Taki and D20 show up every week. They're ranked 7 and 10 on the PA power rankings, respectively.
Everyone there is chill and funny as hell.
You'll get lots of useful advice and experience.
You'll be able to help represent CMU's Smash community.

I'm still convinced that 61D does not stop at 5th and Washington. 61A/B/C work though.

Going by the Port Authority website (http://www.portauthority.org/PAAC/Home/tabid/171/Default.aspx) and using the trip planner, the buses that stop there include 500, 61A, 61B, 61C, 67A, 71A, 71C, 71D. Of course, it's not the only bus stop within reasonable walking distance so I'm sure there are other options.

I'm pretty sure I took the 61D there my first week, but I edited it out to be safe.

thanks for posting this! I kept telling myself I'd get to it, but just never got to it >_<

and sadly, I don't know the new pitt/duq players that well, so I think alex would be able to give a better insight than me. but watch out for rob if you do go... he rapes jiggs D:

oh and the lag on the forums will subside eventually. forumotion is switching to their new server so it's causing some delays and downtime

"THERE WILL BE A $1 TOURNAMENT THIS UPCOMING FRIDAY.

Depending on turnout we shall do 1 round of pools.

What this means is, I need to people (especially those within a 5 mile radius(and alan)) to step up their game and show up.

Of course entrance is not mandatory but I think those who want a good experience in a practice tournament will want to enter anyway. The only penalty in not entering will be being labeled a pusssy for the rest of the day.

That will be all, bring extra setups or what have you for a smooth running tournament. TRY TO SHOW UP EARLY ALSO."

swf quote from Pittsburgh Weeklies Thread: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=89517&page=1046

    "Hello Smash community,
I come to all of you with some rather sad news. A new policy limiting the guest to duquesne student ratio to 2:1 will be implemented and strictly enforced effective tomorrow. My night time boss has spoken to me on the matter, and has asked me to relay this message to you. Considering this new rule, and a rough average ratio of 20 or so non duquesne students to a max 3 (me Taki and Matt F.), we're getting kicked out. Consequences for more than the maximum amount of guests, or unregistered guests, will include being asked to leave, and should it follow that, public safety (duq cops) making them leave.

The reasoning behind said new policy is as follows: The budget for staffing, operating room equipment, and providing free soda/food/activity supplies is paid for by duquesne students. My night time boss has observed a considerable amount of non duquesne students reaping these benefits, and it has become cost inefficient to run the night spot as so. To remedy this, the 2:1 guest limit was created.

That being said, tonight I will email my daytime boss, of whom was closer knit in the decision making, and follow up with a meeting with him regarding the matter. In an attempt to maintain our community gatherings in the nite spot, I will make these points very clear: The smash community has no intent to disrupt normal nite spot operation, nor hinder the duquesne attendees from enjoying their time at the nite spot to the fullest extent. The community has been gathering since 2006 and has maintained a peaceful relationship between students and the building staff equally. To accommodate fluctuations in income/expense differences, the community will not indulge in free food or drink, and stay spacially excluded from night time friday crafts/activities, as well as surrender any TV that a duquesne student requests.

While we may lose our privileges in the nite spot, the commuter lounge is still open to any passersby. With the addition of a second TV, and the newfound ability to borrow TV's from the Information Center, we can still meet at duquesne for weekly gaming. Consider this a temporary alternative for this coming Friday, as I am sure my day time boss will either have to think about it for a bit or say no.

Bring cubes more than wii's, as the majority of TV's will be CRT in the commuter lounge. I hope this does not upset any smashers, I am but the bridge between customers and authority."
